kernel32.dll error message

I have a problem with the file kernel32.dll, which is causing some of my programs to crash due to an invalid page fault. Other times, if a software program crashes and I try to end the task by using Ctrl, Alt, Del, the file kernel32.dll causes a fault with krnl386.exe and the dreaded blue screen comes up. I always have to restart my computer when this happens. How can I fix it?

Kernel32.dll is the core part of Windows and there is unlikely to be anything wrong with this file. There's a remote possibility that it might be corrupt, which you can eliminate by replacing the file with a fresh copy from your Windows installation CD-ROM. You can do this easily using System File Checker. See tip What does System File Checker do?

More likely, though, the problems are caused by the software routines that call the kernel. Unfortunately, the kernel is so central to Windows' operation that there isn't much you can deduce from this. However, graphics card and printer drivers indirectly cause many Kernel32 errors. It would therefore be worthwhile making sure that you have installed the latest versions of the drivers for both of these devices.
